The Department of Clinical Pathology carries out morphological examinations of various samples in order to provide an accurate diagnosis and further take adequate and individual treatment of patients.
Examination objects include but are not limited to:
- Samples (biopsies) taken during surgery to be examined immediately by a cryosection for rapid diagnosis and it can help when resolving about the volume of surgery intervention – in breast surgeries, the genitourinary system, the GI tract, etc. These same samples are subject to a permanent paraffin treatment in regards to providing a precise diagnosis within 2-3 days;
- Endoscopic samples taken while examining the bronchi and the gastrointestinal tract – polyps or suspected cancerous process in these systems. Surgical samples taken from the genital tract, skin, mouth, etc. are subject to examination. Biopsies processing takes 2 days; results are announced on day 3.
- Cytology tests of the effusion in the abdominal and thoracic cavity, the bronchoalveolar lavage, fine needle aspirations and a large number of vaginal smears, including performed during screening tests as well as liquid-based cytology thereof are carried out
- A wide range of histochemical tests in proving various embodiments in the cells and the intercellular space – e. g. amyloids, mucopolysaccharides, mesenchymal elements, lipids, pigments, etc.
- The Department has got a full range of antibodies for immunohistochemical examination of tumors of unknown origin as well as metastases of unknown primary focus. An in-situ hybridization method is about to be introduces – CISH in case of HEP-2 positive – since it is of significant importance when defining the treatment of she-patients.
There is an Oncology Committee at the Hospital and it includes chemotherapeutic specialists, radiologists and pathologists who together examine and define the further treatment of cancer patients – at Acibadem City Clinic or another specialized facility.
Digital pathology methods for carrying out histological solution consultations of external wards shall be introduced in the near future.
