For the first time in the country, a medical team of Acibadem City Clinic Cardiovascular Center successfully completed an invasive cryoablation. The chief consultant at the Department of Electrophysiology and Cardiac Stimulation, in two days completed this complicated method. – yet another way of treating atrial fibrillation. In patients with the same electrophysiological pathology, the success rate of cryoablation is about 10 times higher than the medication therapy.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a type of improper cardiac rhythm that affects the upper cavities of the heart, the atria. In AF, they vibrate instead of displaying normal cardiac rhythm. As a result, the blood in them is not completely pumped out of the upper heart cavities, leading to its retention and clotting.

Typically, AF leads to an accelerated cardiac rhythm. Treatment is important because this condition can adversely affect the quality of life of the person, and may cause a stroke. In people with atrial fibrillation, there is a five times greater chance of clotting and a risk of stroke.

 What is cryoablation?

Cryoablation is a minimally invasive intervention where cardiac tissue gets frozen. A balloon is placed in the area of each of the pulmonary veins, it is inflated and treated at low temperature for a few seconds. Thus, electrical isolation of the pulmonary veins from the left atrium is achieved.

The purpose of the procedure is to prevent electrical pathways from passing from the pulmonary veins to the atrium. It is the pulmonary veins that are the main source of electrical triggering signals causing the AF. Cryoablation stops these abnormal electrical pathways and prevents them from continuing causing AF.

The method is safe and comfortable for the patient. Recovery is quick and the result is long-lasting.

Team and Equipment

For the first time in Bulgaria, the cryoablation method was performed by the team of Prof. Lazar Angelkov, a leading European electrophysiologist, highly qualified in the field of electrophysiology and cardiac stimulation. He applies avant-garde methods to treat even the most severe cardiac arrhythmias. Prof. Angelkov's experience is unique for Bulgaria, in performing interventional treatment of ventricular tachycardias in structural heart diseases, invasive treatment of all types of atrial fibrillation and cryoablation.

The Department of Electrophysiology and Cardiac stimulation at Acibadem City Clinic Cardiovascular Center is the only one in Bulgaria having an installed cryoablation system, manufactured by the American Medronik, a world leader in the production of medical devices. This high-tech and efficient method can only be performed by a highly specialized team which, after some sophisticated training, acquires the ability to work with this precise and expensive equipment, called a Cardiac Cryo Ablation System.
